What is Resize and Extend

Resize & Extend Suite allows you to change the size of an image in pixels or percent value without upscaling it. You can maintain the aspect ratio of the image or change it.

Key uses

Use Resize & Extend Suite operations for:
Fit image requirements on the e-commerce platforms or social media
Remove unnecessary part of the image
Add missing part of the image

Where to find Resize and Extend operations in Claid Studio

Once you're in your Claid's account, go to the Claid Studio Dashboard where you'll see the Resize & Extend tab:

Key controls

Width and Height

Width and Height parameter specifies the size of the output image. It supports dynamic sizing and is based on pixels or percent values.

If Width and Height are not specified the image size will not be changed.

If you specify only one side of the image (Width or Height), Crop-Smart Fit Type will be selected by default. The other side will remain unchanged and you will get a cropped image.

If you specify only one side of the image (Width or Height), but use a fit type other than Crop-Smart (see more about Fit Types below), the other side will be defined automatically and the final image will be resized keeping the aspect ratio.

When both Width and Height are specified the resulting image will be resized until it fully covers the specified dimensions and will be cropped if the aspect ratio is different from the original one.

Fit Type

The fit parameter controls how the image will be constrained within the provided size, relative to its width and height. If the aspect ratio of the target image differs from the original image, one of the fit options will be applied.

For example, if your original image size is 1200x1000 pixels and you want to resize it to 1000x1000 pixels, you will need to specify the fit type depending on the content in the image. If "Crop Center" is chosen, the image will be scaled to fully cover the specified dimensions, cropping 100 pixels from both the left and right sides of the image.
You can maintain the aspect ratio of the image or change it.

To keep the aspect ratio of the image, use Wide-side, Short-side, or Canvas Fit Type.
To change the aspect ratio, use Crop-Smart, Crop-Center, or Outpaint.

Wide-side

Resizing with the fit option 'wide side' scales the image until the larger side reaches the edge of the canvas defined by the width and height.

In this particular example, the width of the image is the larger side, so when adjusting the size values, specify the W (width) value leaving the H (height) field empty, as this will be adjusted automatically:

Short-side

Upscaling with the short-side fit option scales the image until the smaller side reaches the edge of the canvas defined by the width and height.

In the example below, the shorter side is the height of the image, so when resizing, specify the H (height) value field and leave W (width) empty for automatic resizing:

Canvas

Canvas places the input image on a canvas of the specified width and height without changing the aspect ratio and size of the input image. Extra space will be filled with a specified background color.

Crop-center

Crop-center scales the image until it fully covers the specified dimensions, cropping the excess from the center without considering content. You can specify the cropping direction by manipulating the width or height values.

Crop-smart

This is a content-aware cropping mode that detects an object in the image and centers it for cropping.

Outpaint

This option generates a coherent part of an image to fit the specified dimensions, scaling the image until the larger side reaches the edge of the canvas first, then generating content on either the left-right or top-bottom sides symmetrically. This approach enables you to avoid zoomed-in effect which often happens when cropping the image.

⚠️ Outpaint fit type currently has size limitations: the target image size must not exceed 4.19 MP (e.g., 2048 x 2048 pixels, 2350 x 1743 pixels). Our team is working on increasing max size.

⚠️ When using Outpaint, output image aspect ratio should be less than 2:1.
